We are really excited about offering this to you all and I would like to share some general information about our course coming up May 17, 18, and 19 at Big Rocks play spot on the lower Nolichucky river- Nolichucky. This excellent learning spot is located right next to River Park campground - RiverPark Campground - just 45 minutes north of Asheville. Note (May 17th is not a full day clinic, we will talk knots and general topics around campfire that evening).
No required paddling experience is necessary.
We will be following the ACA Level 4 SWR curriculum in this workshop so our plan is to begin the class at 7pm on Friday evening and ending around 5pm on Sunday afternoon in order that we cover the material. We have 3 campsites for 12 folks so consider camping light and leaving the 8 person tent at home for this one.
Cost for Camping and Training is $125.00
Gear that you will need: PFD (I will have extra Rescue PFD's to loan out) , Helmet, Whistle, Knife, Solid Footwear (sandals do not qualify), Throw Rope (60ft or greater ideally) 2 locking carabineers. 8ft of 7mm cordolette of 1/2 inch tubular webbing. Boat and paddle if you plan on participating in the boat based rescue session.
This course is experiential in nature and so we will be doing a lot of swimming, scrambling, throwing and wading in strong current. Because of this I will say that folks generally go home with bumps, bruises and fatigue. We as an entire class we will do our best to keep each other safe but there is a chance of injury that you could incur during this workshop. All activities are challenge by choice and if you do not feel comfortable with something you can always simply choose to observe or participate to whatever level you are feeling at the time. We will have group discussions and fellowship around the camp fire and so a camp chair might be a good idea.
Feel free to email me with any questions about the course that you have.
Thanks again for participating and we will see you guys soon! Nate Ruffrage.
