Indoor Roll Sessions for 2022!

The roll is one of the most important skills to learn in Kayaking and Canoeing. Whether you want to want to progress into Class III/IV whitewater or open water touring and sea kayaking, a good, reliable roll is going to be crucial to your safety and success. Rolling also happens to be one of the most difficult skills to master and maintain. For a lot of boaters it takes constant practice not only to learn but also to maintain this elusive skill. To that end, one of our priorities at Foothills Paddling Club is to provide our members with opportunities to regularly practice, especially in the colder months when there are a lot of us that are not paddling regularly.

The Cain Halter YMCA in Greenville SC, who has been such a great partner of the FPC over the years, is again allowing us use of their facilities to host roll practices and clinics throughout 2022. Here are the details:

Eligibility

Roll practices at the Cain Halter YMCA are being offered to paid Foothills Paddling Club members only. Participants will be asked to provide your membership ID when entering. Find out how you can become a member on our Join Us page.

Cost

The fee we charge to our members for access to the pool is $6; this to cover the monthly use fee charged to the club by the YMCA. On assisted nights there is an additional $6 fee paid to FPC for hands-on assistance, if needed. Fees can can be paid at the door with cash, PayPal, or Venmo.

Assisted and Open Roll Sessions

For 2022, we will continue to offer Assisted and Open sessions on alternating weeks.

Assisted Sessions
On the nights of Assisted sessions, introductory or evaluative kayak rolling instruction is available from an ACA trained instructor at an additional cost of $6 per session ($12 total). There is an annual pass option that includes this instruction.

Playboating skills are not to be practiced at Assisted sessions as we want to keep the pool water calm and we want to ensure the safety of those who will be standing in the water helping to support/instruct others who are new at learning to roll.

Open Sessions
During the Open Roll Sessions, any member at any skill level is invited to practice their rolling or playboating skills. Instruction is not offered for these sessions.

Be sure to check the events page on our website to find see the calendar for which type of session is being hosted in the coming week.
