Chattooga Fest turned out to be an absolutely fantastic weekend with water levels that started at around 2.6 on Friday and held through Sunday morning at around 2.1. With bluebird skies and temps in the mid 70s, the spirit was high and our club showed up in a big way! Late afternoon runs were had by several members on Friday afternoon as others set up camp and got settled in for the weekend. As always it is a special time when you get to see familiar faces and learn new ones. It was unavoidable to not feel a sense of community Friday night. We even got treated to an animated cycling demonstration around the RV camping area! On Saturday many folks took advantage of the great water levels and paddled Section 3, while others worked on their skills at Earls to Sandy and even had a relaxing day on Section 2. Again this year we were priveleged to have Shane Benedict to lead a clinic for those looking to really slice it up on the river and from the stories told it lived up to the expectation.
This is our second year at Chattooga Sounds campground and again the campground was impeccable and Greg Sluder really did an outstanding job of providing excellent accommodations and service. For a second year he smoked a Boston Butt on the smoker for us to add to our dinner and I think the word ‘amazing’ might cover how great it was! This year we were treated to some members that really stepped up and added to our traditional hot dog dinner that we provide. A special thank goes to Joe Mason and Marty Frick that provided so much for dinner. When everybody came off the river and up to the kitchen Joe had the appetizers ready and Marty closed the deal with his chili, slaw and the work he put into grilling out the hot dogs for us. Again a very big thank you to both of you!
As we moved into the raffle it’s important that we remember that we really benefit from our relationships with our sponsors for this event and without them a lot of what we do throughout the year would be difficult for us. So a very special thanks to:
Liquid Logic, Sunrift Outfitters, Quest Brewing, Green River Gorge, Green River Adventures, Altamont Auto Specialists, The Pete Store and Ben Peters.
Finally our Saturday ended with evening music by Brandon Skipper and Ricky Allison. Saturday evenings at Chattooga Fest are always special with evening live music and you guys did an amazing job!
Sunday is always a bit quieter and as some make the trek back home to the real world others stay and try to get that last little bit in before the weekend ends. As usual this weekend was filled with great water, great weather and even better people. I am honored always to be a part of it and even more humbled to be the president of this club. Thank you all for your support and contribution and I look forward to see you out there on the river!
Congratulations to our winners of the L4 Kayak Instructor Scholarship for 2018. Our winners this year are Trevor Conrad and Brandon Skipper! We had the largest field of entries this year, compared to the recent past. We want to thank all of you who entered this year. It was a really close vote and we would have loved to give all applicants a scholarship; they all were well qualified and deserving. We will again offer this is 2019 and we hope that if any of you have this on your radar, 2018 is a great opportunity to get ready for the challenge.
The club wants to challenge and encourage seasoned members to lead paddling trips. If you lead a trip, you will be entered into a raffle to be held during the annual film festival. Trips can be on whitewater, flatwater, SUPing, canoing, kayaking, etc. The trip must be approved by the board, for the leader and venue, prior to the trip.
The Club calendar has been updated with all events for 2018. We have our normal club events plus we have added scheduled releases throughout the southeast. In addition roll practices are available and this year we have roll practice available at Westside Aquatics and the Greenville YMCA. If you need events added to the calendar please contact us anytime.
